One of the world’s oldest treats is the humble mint. Today we use mints as after dinner breath fresheners, candy flavorings, and in toothpaste however mankind has been using mint for a variety of things for ages.

Mint has a colorful history. The word mint is derived from Minthe, the mistress of Hades, the God of the Underworld. Legend has it that Hades and Minthe were romantically which didn’t make Hade’s wife, Persephone, very happy. Persephone’s anger led to turning Minthe into a plant, the sweet herb known as mint.

The ancient Greeks were known to scatter mint leaves on the dead for two reasons. One: to cover the smell. Two: to remind Hades of his past.

Mint was also used by numerous cultures as a medical remedy and for cooking. Today mint is still used for these purposes. Peppermint is a popular remedy for colic, indigestion, headaches, gingivitis, and rheumatism. It also has both anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Add mint leaves to plain yogurt and serve with falafel and pita pockets for an easy Greek-inspired meal.

You can also use mint leaves around the house to freshen smells and even repel ants. Mint is an easy herb to grow and is extremely useful.
