Fralinger's Candy prides itself on creating only the finest macaroons, fudge, mints, chocolates and other sweet treats on the planet, but it is for salt water taffy that the company is most famous. The history of salt water taffy is the stuff of legend, and that legend holds that this sweet confection got its name quite by accident, when a young candy seller opened his taffy stand on the original boardwalk at Atlantic City. At that time the boardwalk sat a mere two steps above sea level, and as fate would have it one night the surf ended up in the taffy stand, where it deposited its sea foam over the candy.
When the young candy seller arrived the next day, he was understandably dismayed to find his stock wet, and he sarcastically referred to his stock as "salt water taffy". The name stuck and the rest is history.
It was at the same time that former fish merchant and glassblower Joseph Fralinger opened his retail store on that same Atlantic City boardwalk. Within a year, the Fralinger's store had added taffy to its offerings, and the family spent the winter perfecting its recipe for the perfect salt water taffy. The list of available flavors grew slowly but steadily, from molasses, to chocolate to vanilla to the 25 flavors of Fralinger's salt water taffy available to candy lovers today.
The Fralinger's Candy company continued to grow, and the company quickly established a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of taffy on the boardwalk and elsewhere. In fact today Fralinger's is known as the ultimate Atlantic City souvenir, and many beach lovers would not dream of heading to the boardwalk without bringing back at least a box or two of these sweet treats for their family members and friends at home to enjoy.
