Sugar Stand has been satisfying chocolate candy cravings for many years but did you know that chocolate has been around for over 2,000 years? The cacao tree was discovered in the tropical rainforests of the Americas. Ancient cultures such as the Aztecs and Mayans were the first known groups to use the seeds of the cacao pods to make a delicious, frothy chocolate drink.
These cultures actually planted cacao trees in their villages and cultivated, harvested, roasted, and fermented the seeds. They used a variety of seasonings including chili pepper and cornmeal to make a bitter drink. These concoctions played an important role in their cultures reaching a level of sacredness. On occasion, the regular Mayan people could have a taste but in Aztec society, these drinks were reserved for royalty, priests, rulers, honored merchants, and decorated soldiers.
Despite its 2,000-year history, the rest of the world wouldn't get a taste until the 1500s when the conquistadors overtook the Aztecs. Within a hundred years of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, chocolate's popularity soared, especially among royalty and the wealthy.
