Traditional Fireside S'Mores
Many of us remember many different sweet treats from our childhood, from marshmallows roasted over an open fire to candy necklaces to that great Trick or Treat candy. However, few of these dessert time treats can compete with the chewy, gooey goodness of s’Mores, and no childhood campfire or sleepover would be complete without this sugary snack.
Fortunately, one does not have to start a campfire to enjoy these great treats, and it is possible for parents to make some great s’mores at home, in the comfort of their own home. The kids and adults alike will enjoy these great desserts.
Ingredient List
- 1 6 ounce milk chocolate candy bar (the original Hershey’s chocolate bar is the classic incredient)
- 8 large sized marshmallows
- 8 large honey flavored graham cracker sections (cinnamon flavored graham crackers can be substituted if desired)
Optional Ingredients and Toppings
- Chopped nuts
- Ice cream toppings such as strawberry, caramel or chocolate
- Miniature chocolate chips
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate candy pieces, such as M&Ms
- Banana slices
If desired, other varieties of candy, like Milky Way, Snickers bars, or even peanut butter cups can be used. The key is to chop the substitute candy bars into eight equal sized pieces and divide them among the eight graham crackers.
Preparation Steps
Preheat the grill to medium heat, or roast the marshmallows over an open fire.
Break each graham cracker section in half, then divide the chosen chocolate bars into eight equal pieces. Place each piece of chocolate on top of one of the graham cracker halves.
Divide the marshmallows to be roasted on to several long skewers, being careful to space them far enough apart so that they will not melt together. Place those large marshmallows on the heated grill and cook them over medium heat. Turn the marshmallows slowly as they are cooking, until the marshmallows have turned a golden brown.
Carefully remove the roasted marshmallows from their skewers and set one on top of each of the pieces of chocolate. Place the other half of the graham crackers on top of each marshmallow for a delicious sandwich.
Making s’mores at home on the grill or fire can be a fun family project for the kids, and many parents like to create a special s’mores night, having the family gather around to create these wonderful sweet treats. Creating these special s’mores is a great project for sleepovers and parties as well, and the long list of optional ingredients means that everyone can enjoy their own special twist on this old favorite.
