How to make a Candy Haunted House

The haunted house is a long time staple of the Halloween candy season, and the fun of the season can extend into the kitchen with the creation of this great candy haunted house. With a little bit of ingenuity it is possible to create a wonderful sweet treat for Halloween parties and other festive occasions.

Ingredient List

  • 12 chocolate candy bars
  • 2 bags of nonpareils
  • 2 bags of candy corn
  • 2 bags of licorice flavored jelly beans
  • 4 bags of assorted jelly beans
  • 6 chocolate wafer bars such as Kit Kat
  • 12 miniature chocolate squares
  • Melted chocolate
  • Assorted candy for decorating the house and yard

Preparation Steps

Place one chocolate candy bar flat on the table with the short side facing toward you.

Hold a second chocolate candy bar lengthwise, and use the melted chocolate to glue it against the long side of the first bar. Hold until it has set. Repeat this same process with two more chocolate candy bars until you have created a four sided box. Repeat to make a total of two four sided boxes. Stand the two boxes upright.

Use the melted chocolate to glue another chocolate bar between the two boxes, forming the front entrance to the candy haunted house. The chocolate bars should be flush with the back of the boxes.

Carefully cut another chocolate candy bar in half crosswise, then use the melted chocolate to glue it at an angle, forming the roof peak. Repeat the process with two more candy bars to form the rest of the roof peaks. Next, use the melted chocolate to glue one roof piece to the top of each standing box.

Balance the third roof piece on the top of the first two to create a roof which extends over the entranceway. Then use the nonpareil candy to glue the shingles on the roof. Use the candy corn and the licorice flavored jelly beans to the front of the house.

Stack the miniature chocolate candy squares and glue them together to create the base for the chimney and the gateposts. Cover them with the melted chocolate and roll them in the assorted jellybeans to create the look of stone. Set the chimney and gateposts aside to let them dry.

After they have dried, use the melted chocolate to glue the chimney to the roof and the gateposts to the front of the house.

Break the chocolate covered wafer candies into long pieces and glue them together to create fences and shutters for the windows. Smear melted chocolate on to the cardboard base with a spoon, creating a pathway to the front door of the haunted house, then cover the pathway with assorted jelly beans to create the look of stone. Use a variety of candies like marshmallow pumpkins, ghosts, cats and bats to decorate the yard in an appropriately spooky manner.
